About Murphys
Gold Country Roasters is proud to be a part of the charming and vibrant community of Murphys, a friendly little town in the heart of California’s historic “Gold Country” in the Sierra Nevada foothills, between Lake Tahoe and Yosemite National Park. No large corporate chain stores here – 100% of the businesses in Murphys are independent, family-owned companies that support the local economy by employing local people and sourcing local products. When you visit Murphys and patronize local businesses, you are helping to preserve the charm and authenticity unique to small-town America, and we thank you for your patronage!
Murphys is a walking town where you can park at one end of Main St. (yes, it is really called ‘Main Street’) and stroll to the other end in a single day, exploring the numerous shops, galleries, wineries and restaurants along the way. The friendliness of the town will draw you back again and again to revisit your favorite stores and eateries and say hello to the new friends you have made.
Murphys has something for everyone. Over 25 wineries on or near Main St. offer tastings of premium, foothill-grown grape varietals; children can enjoy wading in the creek and playing at the playground at Murphys Community Park; families enjoy exploring the nearby caves and caverns and the giant Sequoias at Calaveras Big Trees State Park. Numerous fine and casual restaurants are available for your dining pleasure, as well as boutique shops and galleries featuring local artwork.
In the summer, stop by our shop for iced coffee or a crushed fruit smoothie to savor on our patio, then walk two blocks to enjoy Murphys Community Park (lovingly maintained by community volunteers) and the cooling waters of Murphys Creek. Enjoy a concert or theater production at one of the local outdoor winery amphitheaters. Come fall, the colors of the mature elm trees along Main Street are a treat for the eyes. You can sit in our shop with its large windows and marvel at the red and gold maples.
Bundle up in the winter, and after a day of fun in the snow in Bear Valley, come in for hot chocolate with house-made whipped cream. Wisteria, trumpet vines, and leafy green trees in the spring add to your strolling pleasure. Annual special community events include Murphys Irish Day in March, the Calaveras Grape Stomp and Street Fair in October, the Day of the Dead celebration in November, and the Murphys Open House in December, as well as Passport Weekends sponsored by the Calaveras Winegrape Alliance.
Murphys is a small town with a big heart, and lots going on! Drive up for the day from the Bay Area or Central Valley, or better yet, make it a weekend! Stop by GCR for your morning cup of Joe, and we’ll be happy to direct you too all the wonders waiting to be discovered in this beautiful area that we are blessed to call home.
